. 6th Grade Language Arts Curriculum Susan Batiuchok Pam Brower Richard Martin The Language Arts Curriculum is taught by all three teachers to their homerooms. The three teachers cover the same skills, but in a slightly different manner to suit their individual teaching styles. Resources used include: Textbooks - grammar and reading, literature of different genres, newspapers, dictionaries and other reference materials, Internet, guest speakers, and videos. Course Overviews: Susan Batiuchok This course is designed to develop essential speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills necessary to communicate successfully in life and to enhance the enjoyment of the language arts. The themes, materials chosen, and assignments integrate directly the social studies curriculum of World Geography, allowing students to greater explore and connect to the lands and peoples of this world. Pam Brower Students refine the reading and writing skills learned earlier in elementary. A lot of time is spent on editing and revising written work, individually, with peers, and with a teacher. Students write in a variety of genres. Reading skills are applied to a variety of genres as well, including poetry, folk tales, informational material, short stories, and novels. Some novels are taught with the whole class, others are taught in small groups to accommodate different reading levels of students. Richard Martin The primary objectives of this course are to strengthen the students writing skills and expand their reading skills. Students will be required to read novels, poetry, folktales, and short stories. The students writing will include some creative, persuasive, and technical writing. The students will be expected to analyze what they' read and present their findings in both a written and verbal format.
